Panama Canal and Southern Caribbean – January 2023

Day 9 – Limon, Costa Rica

In Limon we took a really fun Viator tour.  Like so many excursions with Viator, it was organized well, had a great tour guide, and included far fewer people than the “cattle call” tours so common with Princess, in which they pack as many people into the excursion as possible.

Our itinerary included Puerto Limon (the city), Frutería El Almendro and a Banana Plantation (to learn about how the various fruits and plants are grown), and a very fun and informative trip in a small boat on the Tortuguero Canals.

Our first stop was Sacred Heart Cathedral, known locally in Spanish as Catedral Sagrado Corazón de Jesús.

Then, we moved to the Frutería, which is a shop that sells various types of fruit, and learned interesting facts about fruits we knew and a few that were new to us.

On to the Banana Plantation.  Farmers tie blue plastic bags around growing banana bunches to protect the fruit from insect pests, bird damage, sunburn, and harsh weather. These specialized bags also trap heat to create a warm microclimate that speeds up growth, and they cushion the fruit against bruises during harvest.

Along the road, our driver spotted a sloth in a tree and stopped so we could get a close look
