This monument is the Virgen del Carmen (Virgin of Mount Carmel), located in the middle of the bay in Cartagena, Colombia. Erected in 1983, the statue honors the Virgen del Carmen, who is widely revered as the patron saint of navigators, sailors, and drivers and serves as a symbolic protector and welcoming landmark for boats entering the inner harbor.
In August 2015, a powerful lightning bolt struck the historic monument—which had stood in the harbor since 1983 as the patron saint of navigators and drivers—shattering it and sending pieces into the bay. The Colombian Navy and Coast Guard sent down divers to recover the fragments, and artisans completed a full restoration of the historic marble structure. The restored monument in Cartagena Bay was later blessed by Pope Francis during his visit to Colombia in 2017. |
